Vietnam Posts Trade Gap for First Time in 7 Months
Vietnam a posted trade deficit of USD 1 billion in December 2019, shifting from a USD 0.11 billion surplus in the same month a year earlier, a preliminary estimate showed. This was the first trade gap since May, as exports rose 11.2 percent to USD 21.8 billion while imports increased at a faster 11.5 percent to USD 22.8 billion. For full year 2019, the country's trade surplus widened to USD 9.9 billion from USD 8.8 billion in 2018.

Vietnam’s trade surplus declined to USD 0.5 billion in September 2019 from a USD 1.6 billion in the same month a year earlier, a preliminary estimate showed. Exports increased 8.9 percent to USD 23.0 billion, while imports rose at a faster 15.3 percent to USD 22.5 billion. Considering January to September, the country's trade surplus narrowed to USD 5.9 billion from USD 7.1 billion in the same period of 2018.

Vietnam Trade Surplus Narrows in August
Vietnam’s trade surplus declined to USD 1.7 billion in August 2019 from a USD 2.2 billion in the same month a year earlier, as exports rose less than imports. Exports increased 4.5 percent over a year earlier to USD 24.50 billion, boosted by sales of gemstones, precious metals (714.6 percent); footwear (14.3 percent); electronics, computers and components (12.9 percent); means of transports and spare parts (10.1 percent); and phone and component (7 percent). Meantime, imports rose at a faster 7.5 percent to USD 22.8 billion, mainly due to purchases of transportation and spare parts (620.4 percent); coal (102.3 percent); electronics, computers and components (22.2 percent); and machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts (15.5 percent). Considering January to August, the country's trade surplus narrowed to USD 3.4 billion from USD 4.8 billion in the same period of 2018.

Vietnam Trade Balance Swings to Surplus in July
Vietnam posted a trade surplus USD 0.2 billion in July 2019, compared to a USD 0.64 billion gap in the same month a year earlier, as exports rose 9.3 percent to USD 22.6 billion, boosted by sales of electronics, computers and components (19 percent); footwear (15.9 percent); wood and wood products (15.4 percent); and textiles and machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts (11.2 percent). Meantime, imports increased at a softer 5 percent to USD 22.4 billion, mainly due to purchases of means of transport and spare parts (164.3 percent); coal (122.1 percent); automobiles (36.1 percent); and electronics, computers and components (19.5 percent). Considering January to July, the country's trade surplus narrowed to USD 1.8 billion from USD 2.6 billion in the same period of 2018.
