Canada Posts Smallest Budget Gap in Nearly 2 Years
Canada's government budget deficit narrowed to CAD 0.58 billion in September 2019 from CAD 1.36 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year. It was the smallest budget gap since October 2017, as revenues went up by CAD 2.2 billion, or 9 percent, to CAD 27.25 billion, largely reflecting increases in tax revenues and other revenues. Meantime, program expenses advanced by CAD 1.5 billion, or 6.2 percent, to CAD 25.70 billion, amid higher direct program expenses. Public debt charges fell by CAD 0.28 billion, or 1.3 percent, to CAD 2.13 billion.

Canada's government budget deficit widened to CAD 3.67 billion in August 2019 from CAD 1.88 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year. This is the largest government gap since March, as program expenses rose by CAD 1.8 billion, or 7.4 percent, to CAD 26.58 billion, amid higher transfers to persons and direct program expenses. In contrast, revenues fell by CAD 0.30 billion, or 1.2 percent, to CAD 24.60 billion, primarily due to a decline in excise taxes and duties. Public debt charges decreased by CAD 0.3 billion, or 17.0 per cent, to CAD 1.68 billion reflecting lower Consumer Price Index adjustments on Real Return Bonds.

Canada Budget Surplus Widens in May
Canada's government budget surplus widened to CAD 0.71 billion in May 2019 from CAD 0.64 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year. For the first two months of the 2019-2020 fiscal year (April and May), there was a budgetary deficit of CAD 1.4 billion, compared to a surplus of CAD 3.2 billion in the same period of 2018-2019. Revenues rose by CAD 2.3 billion, or 4.2 percent to CAD 56.5 billion, amid increases in tax revenues and other revenues. Canada's government posted a deficit of CAD 14.9 billion in March 2019 compared to CAD 10.7 billion gap in the same month of the previous year. Revenues increased by CAD 1.2 billion, or 4.6 percent, to CAD 27.8 billion, mainly due to an increase in other revenues.
